As we approach International Women's Day, celebrated annually on March 8, I find myself reflecting on the profound strength and resilience inherent in womanhood. This day serves not only as a celebration of women's achievements but also as a reminder of the power we hold individually and collectively to uplift one another.
While the day specifically highlights the experiences and struggles of women — the women's suffrage movement in the 19th century, to the challenges faced by women up till the 21st century, its ultimate goal is to promote unity and equality among all members of the human race.
In the world of business, women have made significant strides, shattering glass ceilings and challenging norms.
From Marie Curie, to Angela Merkel and Jacinda Adern, there have been many firsts for women. The share of women-owned businesses representative of all businesses has skyrocketed from merely 4.6% in 1972 to 1/3 of businesses worldwide. Half the start-ups in the US are founded by women while globally, 1 in 3 businesses has women among the principal owners. However, the share of women hired into leadership roles has only slightly increased by 3.6% over the last 6 years!
Only 3.6% of women hired into leadership roles in the last 6 years ...we can do better 💪 Let's remember that our strength lies in our unity. Let's embrace our diversity, harness our collective power, and continue to empower one another to reach new heights.
In my journey as a woman, from growing up, going to school, and entering the workforce, I've encountered numerous challenges and triumphs. Through it all, one thing has remained constant: the unwavering support and empowerment I've received from other women. Whether it's a mentor offering guidance, a colleague extending a helping hand, or a friend providing encouragement, these connections have been instrumental in my growth and success. (Of course, most of my growing up years were spent in a girls' school, shoutout here to some of my male teachers who had been very encouraging along the way!)
Empowerment, to me, is not just a buzzword; it's a guiding principle that shapes how I navigate both my personal and professional life. It's about recognising the unique strengths and perspectives that each woman brings to the table and creating opportunities for us to thrive together. When we lift each other up, we create a ripple effect of empowerment that reverberates far beyond ourselves.
Happy International Women's Day! ♀️
